In his new book, Dr. Joe Allen has concluded that our urge to protect teenagers from real life – because we don’t think they’re ready yet – has tragically backfired. By insulating them from adult-like work, adult social relationships, and adult consequences, we have only delayed their development. We have made it harder for them to grow up. Tired of moving your fingers over multitouch surfaces, then this transparent glass display from Microsoft Research, which lets the body to be used as a control mechanism, is sure to be your liking. On display in various colleges across the United States, this prototype display recognizes inputs through touch-free gestures and eye-tracking. The content on the display can be manipulated with the help of voice commands or some other notable hand gestures, and in case you’re concentrating too…

If we’re being honest (and trust us, we’re being honest), Pranav Mistry’s Sixth...

If we’re being honest (and trust us, we’re being honest), Pranav Mistry’s Sixth Sense contraption has always baffled us. Or, rather, there was controversy over the licensing. Everyone thought it was great that the White House would have its own Flickr channel and constantly post photos — but since Flickr only had certain licensing options that you could put on a photo, there was a problem. Even though the White House chose a Creative Commons Attribution license at the time, that…

The trailer above is for Between The Folds, a new feature documentary film presented by PBS’s Independent Lens. You can view the whole film on PBS on December 8 or at one of Independent Television Service’s free Community Cinema screenings upcoming around the country. From MAKE:

The film documents “a determined group of theoretical scientists and fine artists who have abandoned their careers and scoffed at their graduate degrees to forge new lives as modern-day paper folders.”
Storrs Hall is an expert on molecular nanotechnology and the head of the Foresight Nanotech Institute (which raises awareness about the very same). Or, to be specific, the kind of robots that will take over the world.

In a piece titled “More on the AI takeover,” Dr. Hall outlines four classes of ‘bots he could see rising up:
